About Werner Sobek

Werner Sobek is director of the Institute for Lightweight Structure and Conceptual Design of the University of Stuttgart and owner of the Werner Sobek group (a consultancy for engineering, design and greentech services which has offices in Stuttgart, Frankfurt, New York, Moscow, Cairo, Dubai, and Khartoum). Werner Sobek is also Mies van der Rohe Professor at the Institute of Technology in Chicago. He designs and builds together with architects like Helmut Jahn, Hans Hollein, Dominique Perrault, Finn Geipel, Christoph Ingenhoven or Ben van Berkel structures and buildings of outstanding importance all over the world.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Werner SobekHis buildings are to be found all over the world, in Lima, Chicago, Limoges, Dubai, Bangkok, Shanghai or St. Petersburg, to name but a few. These buildings show what state-of-the-art engineering is nowadays capable of : structures of fabric, glass, titanium, steel, timber or concrete, which appear ethereal and virtually devoid of mass, pioneering new methods of building construction and imparting astonishing aesthetic qualities to architecture.

With well-founded knowledge and great care Werner Sobek’s Team (Dr. Frank Werner, Dr. Frank Heinlein, Prof. Dr. Harianto Hardjasaputra) introduces the visitors of the exhibition to Werner Sobek’s work, research, and his professional career. The exhibition describes the research work carried out at the Institute and explains the buildings which result from a close cooperation between architects and engineers. It also gives an insight into Werner Sobek’s work as president of the German Sustainable Building Council as well as into his advances in the sphere of green technologies.

Introduction

The Institute of Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design (ILEK) headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Werner Sobek is an institute anchored in two faculties, viz. the Faculty of Civil Engineering and the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Stuttgart. For several decades now, the institute’s research has focused on the optimization of structures with regard to the mass and energy used for construction, maintenance, and deconstruction. The institute combines architecture and civil engineering at the highest level. It involves the development and improvement of computer aided design (CAD). Parallel to that, the institute is also exploring the design criteria and exploitation aspects of lightweight and adaptive structures, as well as the history of construction of vault and shell. The advance research on these three fundamental aspects has made the institute one of the top locations for research on the built environment in Germany and beyond, earning it worldwide recognition and fame.

Prof. Werner Sobek himself is both a structural engineer and an architect. He has received numerous awards and distinctions, such as an honorary doctor’s degree of the University of Dresden, the Auguste Perret Prize, the Hugo Haering Award and many others. Besides his position as Director of the Institute of Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design and as Mies van der Rohe Professor at the Institute of Technology in Chicago he runs an international consultancy offering premium services for the design and engineering of buildings, taking into consideration structures, facades, and sustainability performance at the same time.

Professor Sobek has held several successful exhibitions on lightweight structures. Among these exhibitions was the travelling exhibition “Werner Sobek – Beyond materiality” (2004) in China (sponsored by Goethe-Institut) and the exhibition “werner sobek – show me the future” at Munich’s famous Pinakothek der Moderne.

Werner Sobek is very much looking forward to showing a new exhibition in Indonesia which will be hosted by several Universities in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Semarang and Bandung in 2009. We consider the exhibition as to be very important to allow for new perspective of Indonesia architects, civil engineers and contractors.

The Exhibition

The general attempt is to show to visitors in Indonesia that there is more than concrete and steel to construct buildings. Especially in the big cities, it seems that functionalism is mixed up with uninventive architecture. Thanks to the innovative solutions developed by Werner Sobek buildings can be more attractive without being necessarily more expensive – better engineering and an integrated planning process not only help to reduce the mass of materials used, but can also radically reduce the cost of operating and maintaining a building.

In addition to the works of Werner Sobek’s consultancy we would also like to highlight the cutting edge research done at the Institute of Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design. Our goal is to not only show the final work by one engineer but also give example about how to implement advanced research that can lead to interesting structures into the teaching process at the university.

It is planned to show plans and projections of both the Institute and the consultancy on different locations across Java in summer 2009. Suggestions of places and a timetable can be found at the end of this proposal as well as a possible organizing committee for Indonesia.
