New Zealand’s Engineers approach to latest Canterbury Earthquake

by

by Mr. Jitendra K. Bothara1  and  Sugeng Wijanto2, Ph.D., P.Eng.

1Senior Seismic Engineer at Beca, Wellington, New Zealand
2President Director PT Gistama Intisemesta, Jakarta

Synopsis of Seminar :

Two major earthquakes and thousands of lessor one have occurred near Christchurch causing human and property loss despite the decades of development in earthquake engineering, planning and preparedness in New Zealand. Does this mean that earthquake safety is beyond human reach? Of course not! The suffering and losses caused by the earthquakes have strengthened the New Zealanders and they have being taken as a challenge to develop further to reduce future earthquake suffering and losses.

The issue is: what can Indonesia learn from New Zealand experience ?

About the Main Speaker:

Mr. Bothara is a Senior Seismic Engineer with Beca Carter Hollings and Ferner Ltd.  in Wellington, New Zealand.  Jitendra holds a Masters’ Degree from New Zealand and Bachelors’ Degree from Nepal.  The last 21 years, after his Bachelors, has taken Jitendra’s career from structural engineering to social engineering and then to seismic engineering. He is an ardent believer in identifying strong linkages between social and seismic engineering to help implement seismic protection.

Jitendra has extensively worked on disaster management, disaster preparedness planning and developing the seismic construction capacity of local building stakeholders, policy and social intervention and earthquake design and construction in many developing countries.  He has worked after many earthquakes as part of learning from earthquake mission, post-earthquake assessment teams and led reconstruction teams. He is currently working NZ government funded capacity building of local governments in disaster risk mitigation planning in Indonesia He is presently leading a team of engineers for seismic assessment of buildings in Wellington, New Zealand.  The project plans to assess around 4000 buildings.  Presently he spends most of his time working on assessment and strengthening of building structures, seismic hazard assessment at Beca.

Jitendra was one of the team members which developed National Building Code of Nepal.  He has reviewed a number of standards related with seismic design and assessment.  Jitendra has authored many papers in the areas of earthquake engineering and protection. He is a member of several professional organizations and has served as a reviewer for a number of international journals in structural and earthquake engineering disciplines.

Jitendra is also on the Board of Editors for World Housing Encyclopaedia, and is a management committee member of the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering.  He was a Co-chairman of Earthquake Engineering New Zealand Cluster and chaired an international committee that developed a tutorial on stone masonry construction.
